Many years ago, a young woman took a journey by sea from the UK to the USA. For months and months she saved money for her fare, and once she had that she bought her ticket. Once she had her ticket, she started to save again to purchase food to bring along with her. She bought bread, fruit and dried meats and brought enoughwater for her two week journey.
When she arrived on the ship she entered her tiny cabin and sorted through her food and water to divide up her bounty for the journey. She decided to not leave her little cabin for the two weeks because she needed to protect what she had. Two days before the ship docked in the US she ran out of food. But, so close to the end of her journey she made up her mind to perservere – she was almost there. (more…)

I’ve been looking back at some of my blog posts. I’ve talked about behaviours, emotions, states, skills, lots and lots of resources… today we’re looking at another aspect of us – something that is similar to a state and just as easily manageable – but not always easy to see… An attitude.
An attitude can be defined as a positive or negative evaluation of people, objects, event, activities, ideas, or just about anything in your environment. A persons attitude can drive them forward, hold them back, turn people off and even turn people on. And, interestingly, an attitude can be incongruent with a persons state. This can be confusing! I’ve found out that it is not appropriate to walk up to someone and ask if they have had botox. Apparently it is frowned upon (no pun intended!) But, I have an untested theory and without being able to ask people if they’ve been botoxed, I can’t prove my theory. Yet, I think I’m right.

I hear this all the time – “if I can’t have it now, I’ll never have it.” – and you know what, with that attitude, you are right!
You know as well as I do that nothing significant happens instantly. And, most people I know wouldn’t be happy if it did. There seems to be some sort of ‘universal’ belief that if I didn’t work for it, it doesn’t count. Yet, that is so counter intuitive of “I want it now”.
After all, good things come to those who wait, right?

How many perfectionists do we have out there reading this? I’ll bet there are a whole bunch! I say this, because the world is full of them!
Perfectionism is one of those traits or behaviors that fully encroach and block the ability to be truly confident. In the 12 years I’ve been working with individuals, I am yet to meet a perfectionist who does the perfectionist thing because “it makes me happyâ€. Nope. Rather, “it needs to be perfect so other people will know I’m goodâ€. Its for “themâ€; and too often, there really isn’t a “themâ€. (more…)

Sensory acuity – that is the NLP term for “notice what is happening around youâ€; well, in simple terms at least. From an NLP perspective, when you are sensory acute, you are aware of macro and micro movements and changes that can clue you in on many things.
Unfortunately there are so many people (NLPers included) that lack sensory acuity. These are the people who keep following you well after you have finished a conversation, who keep talking although you look nearly dead due to boredom or who bring the complete opposite emotion into a situation and don’t notice.
