We’ve obscured our truths by something that isn’t true.
One of the many things that sets us humans apart from other animals is our ability to create, innovate and invent. Yet, this upside can sometimes have a downside.  Within our own innovativeness we’ve all created inventions about ourselves and we wear these inventions. The most powerful of them is the invented separate self.
We separate from our real truth, our authentic self and our congruency. When this happens the ego becomes a fearful, separated entity constantly defending itself, trying to validate and justify itself, to pacify its unworthiness. But we have invented this unworthiness and this separation and we get caught up in it and we begin to create life sabotaging patterns that move out into every area of our lives. I think the most life limiting and life sabotaging patterns are our stories – many of them are not serving you.
What are the stories that work within your life?
These are the stories that are deeply embedded in our belief systems, they are the mental models that we have fashioned of ourselves. It’s how we conceive of ourselves – what we just naturally think of the way that it was and is for us. Our quirks, idiosyncrasies, and our limits. And we’ve create this mental model and we fashion these stories and tell them over and over again and we believe so much that they are true that we’ve identified with them and AS them. Remember – it is done unto us as we believe!
So we have invented these stories and the universe is compelled to honour that and create what you put out there. In this way, we have unwittingly sabotaged our life through our stories; but we don’t have to do that. But, these stories habitually creep up and we keep telling them and living them as them, until we consciously change them.
Do any of these opening lines sound familiar?
- The reason I can never get ahead is…
- Something I’ll never get over is…
- The part of me that always gets in the way is…
- If only I had ____
- If only I had or hadn’t done _____
- I don’t feel worthy because …
- I always give but I never receive in return…
These are just the opening lines that spell the onset of a person’s story that is life limiting.
An interesting thing about these stories that we tell ourselves and about ourselves are just our composed responses to setbacks of painful experiences in most cases. Some of them happened early in our life, some of them we learned from others. They are not truths, they are simply composed responses. When we tell a story enough, we begin to own it as true; but we need the distinction between something you believe is true and the truth. Because to believe that something is true doesn’t mean that it aligns with the Universal Truth about us, and we want to make this distinction.
Without that distinction we obscure our own personal power and we also neutralize our creative ability to make choices about our life. Its by choosing new that we can begin to reformulate our consciousness and therefore our life.
What stories are you consciously aware of that you need to release? What is a story you tell to yourself so that you get hypnotized into it or that you find yourself speaking to others that limits you?
Just realizing these stories are not enough to just let them go, but it is the beginning. Until you consciously change these stories (and we have some exceptional NLP techniques to help you do just that!), they will keep telling themselves because they are rooted in the habits of the unconscious mind. But, when you know they are a story you can catch yourself in them, and choose to go in a different direction.
- Set up and activate your internal truth teller – this internal truth teller can tap you on the shoulder (or give you a swift kick when you need it) to tell you that a story is being told! Something inside of you can cringe and you can know “oh wait, that’s a story! That isn’t the highest truth about me, that’s an excuse I came up with a long time ago. And, it used to keep me safe and make me comfortable in the past and I didn’t have to grow or change, but it’s a story and I don’t want to go there anymore!â€Â Because if you keep telling the story, you will begin to believe that story and make it true. When you activate your internal truth teller you can be vigilant, keenly observing what you say, keenly observing your state and identify a story that is just a composed response from long ago that has been allowed to get rooted into you. This is the beginning of transformation.
- Empower Your New Story – instead of a few or many goals, it may be more empowering to write a new vision; what is the vision you hold for you which is your overall way of being? Sometimes we jump to what we want to have or what we want to do, where sometimes its more powerful to start with your vision for Being. This might be how you want to show up, how you want to represent yourself, how you want your heart to guide your life, how you want to be recognized – kindness, gracious, loving, kind, fun – all the ways you want to BE – and then from that become clear about what you want to have and what you want to do.
Then, take this vision and using your NLP skills create a Well Formed Outcome about this vision and then use the Future Goal tool to place this Vision into your future. The more you fall in love with your vision the more compelled you will be to support it and nurture it so you ensure that all of the weeds that you find get pulled up quickly so they don’t choke off what is growing within you.
When we empower a new story we can reclaim our own personal power and take charge again of who we are. AND, more importantly we can step out of a story that is self limiting and disempowering. We can take off the mask and honor our new truths so we can express our truth and authenticity.
So realizing this – what is the new story you want to embrace? And what are the beliefs, patterns, habits, behaviours and stories that you need to transform or change? Remember – your NLP tools like Parts Integration, Collapsing Anchors, New Behaviour Generator, Unconscious Pattern Change, Swish Pattern, Integrating Anchors, Changing Meta Programs, Changing Strategies, Reimprinting, Communicating with Symptoms, and so many more are resources you can use to change what isn’t working in your life.
Onward and upward with your new and more powerful story!
Excellent article Heidi and it confirms what I’ve been noticing.
When a client is stuck, not doing what they agreed to do or otherwise procrastinating I usually discover that they are attached to a story. Often it has become so engrained they don’t even realize how the story has impacted their life.
When they gain this awareness they are then open to doing something about it and using an NLP tool such as changing meta programmes or looking at unresourceful beliefs is a great way forward.
I agree Joan – a person can get so stuck in their story that it becomes their truth! NLP is awesome for helping people to get unstuck!!
