There are two constants in life. OK, there are more than two… but I’m narrowing it down today. These two constants face us every minute of every day.
Choice and Change.
With the ticking of the clock we have both of them throughout the day; and then we have other aspects of life from our own thoughts to other people to the weather. If you look for certainty in life, it is certain that there will always be choice and change.
But some people tend to forget about the choice part.
I regularly meet people in my practice who don’t like change. They have their set of rules, their way of doing things, their mindset and when life throws something in to mix it all up – instead of stiring and mixing the ingrediants to create a cocktail of choice, they get into a mess.
Now, there are also people who thrive on uncertainty. And often they put themselves into life situations that are always different and changing.
What can the person who doesn’t like change learn from the other? The one thing that really sets the second person apart is their ability to identify and make choices. They are not always good at it, but they enjoy it. They enjoy taking charge, having responsibility in their life and mixing their own cocktails.
In every situation, wihtout choice we can tend to feel stuck, small, compressed, depressed, etc. But – if you are able to stop for a moment to become aware of what is going on and that you feel these things, not because of something impending life, but become aware that there are a few options- the cloud will lift. And beyond the cloud is more clarity, freedom, choice, happiness and life.
In NLP there is a Presupposition that says the person with the most flexibility in behaviour will control the situation. The situations that this flexibility is most important are those that you are on your own for. I love the phrase the most important words you can ever utter are those that you say to yourself, about yourself, when you are by yourself.Â
What if what you told yourself was that you have choice – and that change is a great thing to accept?
The possibilities are endless!
