“In spirit there is no competition, only completion.â€
How often do you stop and take a look at your life? I mean really look at life? It seems that so much of the time people are already thinking about the next thing they will do, or where they will go, or what is next on the ‘list’. To me, it is even interesting to listen to the language people use. Here is a normal everyday type of conversation:
- Person 1: How are you today?
- Person 2: I’m OK.
OK? Just OK? You are in the arms of the universe with so much beauty and powerfulness in your life and you’re just OK? I’m mean really?
Although it’s very subjective, where do you fit on this spectrum:
Q: How are you today?
A: bad – poor – ok – good – great — exceptional
What has happened in life that we sometimes overlook exceptional, or even extraordinary? How can you activate magnificence in your life?
Near the end of the year, I always take time to look at the past twelve months and give thanks to where I am, how I got here and what I’ll be taking with me into the future. For the past seven or eight years my great friend Melanie and I have been strategic in how we review and preview at the end of the year – we call it ‘doing our yearly’. It is actually a self-contemplation form we’ve created that looks at:
- What were my goals for the past year?
- What did I accomplish?
- What am I proud of for the past year?
- What did I learn this year that I’ll take with me?
- What are my goals for the upcoming year?
- What will I be proud of this time next year?
It’s a great way for me to say goodbye and hello to the outgoing and incoming year. That being said, nothing really ends does it? It’s all just a hallucination… an imagination… it’s all make believe. Right? Well, if it is or not, I might as well live it the best and most fun as possible. That, is at least my idea!
So, my yearly doesn’t just get saved somewhere in my computer – it is a living, working document. I’m continually taking stock through the year where I am in my goals, how I’m growing, learning, progressing and living. I make changes when necessary. Sometimes its easy, a lot of the time it takes work.
It’s humorous to me sometimes when I talk to my students or clients about some of my own challenges. I often get cocked headed looks (like a dog) that says “you have challenges? But you know NLP!†Knowing NLP doesn’t mean I don’t have challenges! It means I have a toolbox to go to when I want to face those challenges. Yet, my tools of NLP mean absolutely nothing if I don’t use them. NLP works, if you work it.  Â
If I do nothing, if my thoughts are mediocre thoughts, if my actions are unrewarding actions, then I will get mediocre, unrewarding rewards of nothingness in my life.
One thing I love about having goals to move with throughout the year is that I have something substantial to measure myself against – not in competition, but in completion. I often look toward my life to see how I can enrich each moment. If I find that I’m spinning in mediocre thoughts and unrewarding behaviour I stop for a moment and ask myself “what am I telling myself about this situation?†My intention behind this question is to awaken my own inner power. I often find myself asking myself “am I doing all I can to maximise this moment?â€Â
I am in charge of my mind, and therefore my results. If I’m experiencing a downturn, am I doing all I can to rise up? Or am I at the same vibration as the problem?
Here’s my question for you – next time someone asks you “How are you today?†what will your answer be?
What a fantastic article – Each time I read it there is something “new” that I hadn’t spotted before, and therefore more for me to do perhaps. I offer the opinion that if people really spent time to formulate achieveable goals and then persued them, their lives would be a lot more rewarding. Their focus would be on the outcome, not the problem, and when asked how they are, inevitably they would say GREAT THANK YOU
How right you are Des! I meet so many people that just want to either ‘be there now’ or who only focus on the problem. I think my favourite line in this post if I do say so myself is nlp works if you work it. Des, for many years now there hasn’t been one of our students as dedicated to his learnings of NLP as you. You are truly an inspiration!
The more I live the more I understand what is life all about. I now realize, life is a matter of giving/getting, so the more you give, the more you get. And whatever happened to us, good as well as bad things, it reflects what we had given, so deep observation is needed because each day is an exceptional day. So nextime when someone ask me how are you today, sure Heidi, I will respond: I’m exceptionally great!
A slumber mind awakening article, a resolution statement without reflection adds almost no power to the words of resolution itself.. The simple 6Q’s of self contemplation form with knowing one’s own goals level of achievement is set to bring them to the next higher level of learning experiences, comes with it gratitude to always greet others “excellent, thanks”..
How right you are Siswanta! No reflection on our desires create empty desires which will probably become unfulfilled ideas. To put yourself in it helps your goals and dreams to become reality.
