The holiday season can be a joyous one. It can also be a hectic and stressful one. So many things to do, people to see, gifts to buy – it can be a bit overwhelming. Today I want to shed a bit of light on a few NLP ways that you can overcome overwhelm and stay calm, cool and collected during the Christmas holiday.

First – baby steps. You don’t have to do everything at once! One thing at a time. Make a list of the people you want to shower with presents, the parties you are attending and the meals to be prepared. Chunking Down is a great way to get everything in your head out of it. It is too easy to get into a moment of paralysis by analysis – besides, the conscious mind can only hold a few things in it at one time. Once you’ve chunked down your tasks, you can then priorities and plan.

Next – state management. A state is a mood or emotion that you are in; and you have choice about it. If you start to feel overwhelmed or frustrated, the first step to managing your state is to acknowledge where you are now. Once you’ve acknowledged it, you can choose what state you’d rather be in (ie. Calm, productive, loving, etc.). When you have chosen your state, remember a time when you felt the new state and then move your body to reflect this new and more resourceful mood. Now, you can continue what you were doing, but in a new way.

Finally – look at the bright side. Something that is often overwhelming during the festive season is the people you spend it with. Using a few sleight of mouth tricks, you can change your thoughts and change your mind. Instead of thinking/saying “my brother is annoying” – try “my brother has been annoying” – this puts the limit in the past for your unconscious mind. Or, “I can’t wait for my mother in-law to go home” try “when my mother in-law has gone home we can all relax” – future paces the outcome you desire.

Remember – you are in charge of your mind, and therefore your results! Even during the holidays!
